Design tool guide
Choosing a PDF design tool for your lead magnet checklist
Turn approved copy into a readable, reusable PDF. Check text fit, links, editable files and exports before you pay for anything.
Choose the kind of workflow you need.
This guide is for one task: you already have an approved checklist, worksheet or short guide, and you need it to become a PDF that readers can open, follow and use. If you still need to draft the content, a different kind of tool may fit better. Decide which job you are hiring software for before comparing plans.
Design-only editor
Assess when the copy is approved and page layout is the main gap. Check text fit, reusable styles and editable source files.
See layout criteriaEnd-to-end generator
Assess when drafting and export need to work together. Check revision control, output limits and layout flexibility.
Consultant software guidePrebuilt template
Assess when an editable structure could support a repeat task. Check file access, design constraints and usage terms.
Template pack guideMany consultants need none of these. A word processor you already pay for can export a clean PDF. The candidates section below includes that path.
Build your brief as you read.
Use the free 21-page fillable Lead Magnet Brief Builder: 15 lettered worksheets from finding an idea to a one-page brief and a readiness check, with three fictional worked examples.
Free: we send you a short email first. Reply VERIFY to it and we email you the workbook, then four short follow-up emails over two weeks (the last one names our own $79 Workflow Pack). Every email has an unsubscribe link.
What to compare before choosing.
Use the same finished checklist for every tool. The criteria below describe what a usable lead magnet PDF needs, not what any particular product does.
| Criterion | What to verify | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Text fit | Long headings and realistic answer space fit without clipping or tiny type. | The same approved checklist placed in each tool |
| Brand styles | Type, colour and repeatable formatting can be saved and reused. | Branded sample pages |
| Editable source | You can revise the file after export without rebuilding it. | The source file reopened and edited |
| Hyperlinks | Links survive export, point to the right page and have descriptive labels. | Every link clicked in the exported PDF |
| Fillable output, if needed | Fields accept answers, save and reopen with the answers intact. | A save, close and reopen record |
| Mobile readability | Pages remain readable on a phone with usable zoom. | Device and viewer notes |
| Export quality | No missing content, watermarks, broken page breaks or blurred images. | The final PDF inspected page by page |

Use one checklist for a fair comparison.
Use identical approved copy and brand inputs.
Same text, same logo, same two colours, same fonts where available. No approved copy to hand? Use a sample bundle’s finished checklist as identical test copy; the bundles are fictional and labelled.
Build the same checklist or worksheet in each candidate.
Do not simplify the content to suit one tool. Awkward fit is part of the evidence.
Export and inspect links, layout and editable files.
Open the PDF in at least two viewers, including one on a phone. For fillable output, enter realistic answers, save a copy, close it and reopen it.
Record the device, viewer, date and any limits.
Keep a short log for each tool so a later decision rests on what you saw.
| Candidate | Tool name and the plan you used |
|---|---|
| Version or date | The date of your export |
| Export file | The file name you kept |
| Findings | What worked and what needed repair, with page numbers |
| Limits | Anything you could not check |
Potential value and drawbacks to inspect.
Potential value to assess
- Consistent checklist presentation.
- Reusable styles and editable layouts.
- Less repair work across repeat resources, if your own test shows it.
Possible drawbacks
- Rigid layouts or awkward text fit.
- Inaccessible or hard-to-read exports.
- Watermarks or plan restrictions.
- Manual updates across repeated files.
Match the output to the task. A simple checklist needs clear hierarchy, tick boxes and sensible page breaks. A working worksheet needs answer space. A fillable PDF needs real form fields that save in common viewers. The PDF formatting guide covers hierarchy, links and mobile opening in detail.
Documented candidates to investigate.

- Claims in the content have been checked with the Source & Claim Review Checklist.
What a future recommendation would need.
We will not name a preferred tool until we hold dated evidence: the same finished checklist exported from each candidate, opening and link checks in named viewers, an inspection of each editable source file and, where forms matter, a save-and-reopen test. Our Review Methodology explains how such work would be labelled.
